Compute: New desktop PC would be better than rebuild

Q. I have a Dell Dimension desktop with a Pentium 4 processor and I am thinking about ways to upgrade it to make it faster. I have already maxed out the memory. Do you think a motherboard swap is possible in this box? Would it generate a noticeable improvement?
A. I had a buddy in college who put a Porsche 914 engine he got in a junkyard in some manner of Volkswagen. It eventually worked, sort of, but the effort/money ratio was way, way off. This is the same problem you're going to have with your Dell. You could find a good motherboard upgrade for your Dimension, but you would easily exceed the cost of a new desktop computer by the time you did the pricing, got a new processor, the new RAM that will went with it (yup, you'd need DDR3), the new optical drives (you'd need SATA drives), new hard drives (SATA too) and keyboard and mouse (USB only).
A far better idea is to purchase a new desktop PC for pretty good prices. I am fond of the Dell Outlet, where you can get scratch-and-dents and refurbished computers online. If you do that, you will have brand-new everything, including a new operating system and a warranty. You will also have a fully functional system to pass down to a kid or a nearby school or church (generating a tax deduction, which helps pay for the new one).
