To paraphrase that old chestnut, it really is the most wonderful time of year - for grads at least. Free from school and looking forward to an 'endless summer' will make many a graduate happy.
Of course, what would make them even happier would be to receive a bit of a reward for all those late night study sessions and soul-crushing exams.
If 2011 is the year of the tablet, Motorola was the first out of the gate with the XOOM. Running the built-for-tablets "Honeycomb" Android operating system, the 10" XOOM is ideal for grads who want to steer clear of all things Apple. That said, the XOOM is just as functional as an iPad (approximating its weight and size) and works great as laptop/netbook substitute. Google and Motorola are also committed to rolling out a much-anticipated software update for Honeycomb. Available for $599.99 at Best Buy Canada and Future Shop.
If a 10" tablet is too large for your grad, LG's 8.9" Optimus Pad is great for someone looking to tote around a smaller tablet but with the same functionality as its larger siblings. Also powered by Honeycomb, the Optimus Pad has a feature not seen on any other tablets to date - a 3D camera that will capture images and video for playback on a 3DTV or via YouTube 3D. Available on select data plans through Rogers Communications.
A lot of times, many things that are even driver-only in Windows are plug-and-play in Linux. One way to see if it works, assuming you have not edited the layout of Ubuntu, is go up to the top-right corner, and if you see the little computer monitors up there, you should right-click it first and select “Enable Wireless”. Then, click on it, and select your wireless network. From their site: “Many vendors do not release specifications of the hardware or provide a Linux driver for their wireless network cards. This project implements Windows kernel API and NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) API within Linux kernel. A Windows driver for wireless network card is then linked to this implementation so that the driver runs natively, as though it is in Windows, without binary emulation.”
