I live in a big house and the signal becomes very weakin few points. I wonder if it would be possible to turn one computer connected to a repeater (or a second access point) without buying a Repetae, to better cover the home WiFi network. Any software available or any other means?? Thank you!
Your question suggests that you already have an access point. Now, you can not make your PC as a wireless repeater but you can make your PC to work as proxy server. So your computer will be connected to other PC devices via cable / wireless and you can send / Receive data You need to have table entries for that IP. Linux Standard Order as addroute and others to do so. In addition, you can take a look at the squid proxy server.

Is connecting to the internet via a WiFi network repeater less effective than connecting to a router directly? If I were to use repeater for online gaming might there be any noticeable lag?
Additionally, any suggestions for cheap effective network repeaters would be appreciated!
Yes and no... it is less effective than connecting directly to the router, if you have a good signal to the router. There is always more of a chance for packet loss every hop it has to take, but you would benefit if your signal is really weak connecting directly to the router wirelessly.
I am assuming you are wanting to use a repeater to boost your wireless signal in an area that you currently don't have a signal or it is really weak. So... I would say that they repeater would be a good idea.
Although, your best connection would be to run a network cable from the router to your computer... if both support it.
