Good Wifi Amplifier?

Where I live there are two wireless networks is not even a mile away from me. So I'm looking for a reminder of good WiFi signal amplifier /?

I am not familiar with them so could you give me an idea for one to get? I would preferably one that can go 1 mile past so I have more networking options.

my budget is $ 50, even if no one thats good enough to extend a mile past could you recommend any type of signal booster?

USB WiFi amplifier...will it work?

My brother lives in an outdated dorm where the only wired internet available is Token Ring and for him to use it he would need some sort of adapter as well as changing from Vista to XP (according to his college's IT department Vista will not work with Token Ring).

They also have wireless, but he only gets signal if he sits in the corner up against his door.

So I am looking for a way to help him out with this and I thought that a dipole antenna would help. I found one on eBay here:

If the link does not work just search eBay for "Hi-Gain Wireless 200mw USB Adapter 2dBi Dipole Antenna" to find the one I am talking about.

Anyway, I am thinking of two possible options, my brother has a desktop computer (that he prefers to use but cannot in his current situation) and a laptop.
1. Connect the USB WiFi amplifier to the desktop computer and connect to the schools wireless internet and then setup an ad-hoc network between the laptop and the desktop (both running Vista if that matters) so both have internet access.
2. Connect the amplifier to the laptop and get internet access on it only but hopefully not have to sit in the corner by the door.

Would either of those options work? Would that amplifier get any better signal than the WiFi adapter built into his laptop (it is a 2 year old Dell if that matters)?
I have a spare WRT54G (I recently upgraded my own to a wireless N)...could you email me at gamer1612@yahoo.com and tell me more about the ddwrt and how to do it?

Wow, token ring..

Might be easier to get a DD-WRT capable device (basically any linksys WRT54g variant), load the ddwrt firmware, and put it in wireless repeater mode. The wifi radios in routers are stronger than the ones in normal PC's (also you can raise the power in ddwrt). It will just look like the school network when he's connecting, but will have plenty of range.

If you're pretty network apt, you could also buy a cheap cisco router (2612 that has both ethernet and token ring interfaces). Then you can connect the PC to the normal ethernet port of the router and it will do the translations for you.
